About Water Governance Institute

Water Governance Institute (WGI) is an evidence based, not-for-profit, non-political and Non-Government Organization (NGO) established in October 2008 and registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee in February 2009. The primary purpose of the institution is to engage government and other stakeholders on policy, governance and development issues related to water, its associated natural resources, infrastructure and availability challenges linked to its use, climate variability and change. It is a membership organisation that includes individuals ,civil society organisations, Private Sector and Government Agencies working at different levels of society in East Africa.

In Uganda we operate in Arua, Amuria, Moyo, Gulu, Hoima, Kabarole, Ntoroko, Kasese, Bushenyi, Kanungu, Mbarara, Isingiro, Rakai, Kampala, Jinja, Greater Mbale, Kamuli, Adjumani, Bududa and Bulisa.

The founding principles of the institute are enshrined in the beliefs of social justice, human rights, equality, democracy, participation, good governance, transparency and accountability, respect of persons, equitable access to and control of natural resources and associated benefits. The institute is, therefore, committed to the elimination of social injustices, exclusions and marginalization of all East Africans in a globalized world.

Our Objectives

  • Enhance good governance in the management of water and associated natural resources.
  • Promote gender parity in the management of water and associated natural resources.
  • Increase public awareness on best practices in the management of water and associated natural resources management.
  • Contribute towards climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.
  • Develop and enhance the capacity of WGI to achieve its objectives.
